Carl Heinrich Maria Orff wurde 1895 in München geboren. Obschon er aus einer Offiziersfamilie stammte, erhielt er schon früh eine solide Musikausbildung, sang im Schulchor und spielte Cello, Klavier und Orgel. Er wurde Berufsmusiker und Pädagoge – dabei entwickelte er eine neue Methode der Musikerziehung, bei dem Kinder die Einheit von Musik, Bewegung und Tanz erleben sollen.
Als Komponist war Carl Orff zwar recht produktiv, schrieb Bühnenwerke, Kantaten und Chorwerke, aber sein bei weitem bekanntestes Werk sind die „Carmina Burana“, die „Lieder aus Benediktbeuern“, eine Vertonung von lateinischen und mittelhochdeutschen Texten, die im 11. und 12. Jahrhundert entstanden sind und im Kloster von Benediktbeuern gesammelt wurden.
1935 und 1936 vertonte Orff 24 dieser Texte in einer groß besetzten Komposition. Die Liedtexte behandeln weltliche Themen wie Natur, die Freuden des Essens und des Trinkens, die Vergänglichkeit des Lebens und des Glücks sowie Liebe und Wollust. Das Werk ist in drei Teile gegliedert, die von zwei kraftvollen kurzen Chorsätzen zu Ehren der Glücksgöttin Fortuna eingerahmt werden.
